Where the money goes
The Good Retreat is run personally by Sonny Phillips and is not yet a registered sole trader business, so it is not taking income today. The half-of-profits promise below is a personal commitment, and it will be formalised in the business accounts once registration is complete.
Crowdfunding support
We are currently running a Crowdfunder for people who want to help launch and grow The Good Retreat — marketing, better annual-ceremony awards, and the official app. Crowdfunder pledges are direct support to the business, not a donation to charity, and they are not tax-deductible. They do not affect the 50% profit-to-charity split below.

Cancer Research UK
The whole charity half goes to Cancer Research UK (registered charity no. 1089464). This one is personal: my dad has cancer, and I have seen first hand how much the research and the care around it matter to families going through it.
The other half
The other 50% goes mainly towards reinvestment, to help The Good Retreat grow — marketing and awareness, app development, hosting, safety and moderation, accessibility work, and building the features members ask for.
Eventually I will start taking a minimal amount from that half to support myself through university, so I can leave my current job and put that extra time into developing The Good Retreat and looking after the people who use it. Anything I take will be recorded in the business accounts and will never come out of the 50% pledged to charity.
How the 50% is worked out
- “Profit” means income from The Good Retreat after running costs and tax, calculated from the business accounts for each financial year.
- Donations are made annually, after the accounts for that year are finalised.
- If a year makes no profit, there is nothing to give and nothing is implied to have been given. We would rather say that plainly than exaggerate.
- The split is worked out automatically from the ledger of income and costs, and the figures for each year are published in the table above. Once a financial year closes, that year's donations are scheduled automatically and marked as paid with a reference.
What this is not
This is a pledge by the business about its own profits. It is not a fundraising appeal, and we never ask members for donations or run prize draws. We are not acting as a fundraiser on behalf of the charities named here, and naming them does not imply they endorse The Good Retreat. Members must not use deeds, comments or projects to solicit money — see the community guidelines.
